A love triangle, double childbirth drama, baby otters and stunning views of Corfu delighted fans of The Durrells as the show’s second season came to an end.
Viewers of the ITV series finale on Sunday night watched as Keeley Hawes’ protagonist character, widow Louisa Durrell, once again faced admirer Hugh’s calls for her to return to England – but his advances were overshadowed as Leonora and Dr Petrides’ wife both went into labour, as well as Gerry’s otter.
It made for a perfect balance of drama for fans, with many already calling for more installments of the 1930s-based show.
The Durrells was such a perfect episode. Great end to the series.
Viewers also fell in love with the show’s picturesque Greek island setting.
But fans need not be disappointed for long as a third series of The Durrells is reportedly in the making already.
According to The Radio Times, writer Simon Nye revealed at the BFI & Radio Times Television Festival earlier this year that “series three” would feature some “exotic new animals.”
Before the finale was broadcast, Keeley, 41, agreed that the show offered something for everyone.
"I'll try to be more in love with life, and people. And I don't care if that sounds sentimental."
“It’s something that the whole family can watch together,” she said. “That’s very rare these days because it’s very difficult to make it work.
“From the age of nine to 94, all these generations sit together to watch this show. I can’t think of anything else that does that.”
Describing her most recent stint on the drama as a “perfect job” which she did not want to end, she added: “I’d like to go back to Corfu every year.”
